No More Media
Have you ever cataloged your media? Your CDs, DVDs, books, tapes and the like? See, I married a librarian. For all our forty-seven or so years together I've been promising her an online catalog of our media for her to manage, like a librarian needs to.
And finally someone wrote a sweet app to catalog media. Sure, there have always been FOSS (free or open source software) and shareware movie databases and the like, but all either too expansive or too trivial. Now there is Delicious Library. And it's, well, it is delicious.
So today I've scanned all of our DVDs and video games in, and started on the CDs and books. And I discovered something. I DON'T NEED TO BUY ANY MORE DAMN MEDIA.
There are at least twenty movies in this collection which I have purchased and NEVER watched. I don't watch twenty movies in a year! That's about $400 invested, and for what? For shrink-wrapped discs in a closet! The MPAA doesn't deserve any more of my money. In fact, I question the need to own any media whatsoever. The kids these days don't seem to have the equivalent of 'record collections' like we did back in the 50's. They know they can find whatever they want online, or borrow media. And you know what, the kids are all right.
So, additional New Year's resolution.
No media buying in 2007.
